Another Sql 2005 Express Installation Problem

I am receiving the following message when trying to install Sql Server 2005 Express: "An installation package for the product Microsoft Sql Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli.msi'. I have verified that the sqlncli.mis file is included in the file being extracted by the installer and I have redownloaded the installation program 3 times from the MSDN site in case the file was corrupt.

Any ideas?I was able to solve my own problem by copying the 'sqlncli.msi' file to another folder during the failed installation.

Then after the failed installation I ran the sqlncli.msi by itself and it installed the Sql Native Client on its own just fine.

Then I ran the installation again and it made it past this point fine and completed the rest of the installation successfully.

This was on a Win2000 Professional machine. I am leaving this post here just in case anyone else runs across this.|||

Thanks a lot man "Johansec".

Your solution worked for me.

But to be perfectly honest I didn't want to debate the point, I want to
learn about using profiler to effectively capture this information and
suppose I was looking for a quick answer.

Another merge agent for the subscription is running

When trying to replicate I get the message "Another merge agent for the
subscription(s) is running."
Both publisher/distributor and subscriber are SQL2K SP3.
There is no orphan process for the agent in the sysprocesses table.
I monitored the sysprocesses while the agent is connecting: for few
seconds several processes added to the list with the host name of the
subscriber, all start and gone in the same time, and then I get the
message above.
Please help
Yes, the ActiveX is in use, but only it. No other agent for the
subscription is running.
The publication was created by hand with the wizard.

What this means is that another replication step is running while this step was executed. Check all the steps that are Running in Replication Monitor -> Publishers/Subscribers and check if any other steps are running. If they are then you will have either wait for them to be done or you can force them to stop. Once all the steps are stopped then you can run your replication step.

Hope this helps

Another cryptic message from SQL 2005 SSIS

It reminds me of the "opearation was successful the patient died" scenario.

Compare this to the SSIS Error message:

The Execution method succeeded, but the number of errors raised (1) reached the maximum allowed (1); resulting in failure. This occurs when the number of errors reaches the number specified in MaximumErrorCount. Change the MaximumErrorCount or fix the errors.

Why can't they write meaningful messages?

You haven't understood the inherent differences between SSIS and DTS. SSIS is a much more secure environment and will not allow you to store passwords with the same freedom as DTS did. Can I politely suggest that you familiarise yourself totally with this new tool before you start to blog about it and thus post inaccurate information. You are not helping the SSIS community by doing so.

annoying SQL Server error message

Hi,
We have developped many applications, for a major customer, connected
to the same SQL Server database. Those apps have been programmed in VB6
and VB.NET. The SQL Server is located on a dual-processor server,
running Windows 2000 Server, with 3 gigs RAM. The apps are installed on
Windows 2000 and Windows XP/SP2 client.
And the Windows 2000 client PC's, there is no problem at all. But, on
the XPs, we have, this error message popup: "Unable to load SQL Server
OLEDB provider ressource DLL. The application cannot continue". Look
like it appears randomly.
The same application, when installed on a Win2000, don't have any
problem at all. Just the damn XP machines. We cannot change the OS of
these PC's (enterprise rules).
This error is a major problem because it stops the application until
you acknowledge the error. The app is used for realtime control of a
factory, so, you see the problem...
XP workstation uses MDAC 2.8 SP1 for Windows XP SP2
2000 uses MDAC 2.6 RTM
Apps has been compiled on a MDAC 2.8 SP1 Win XP SP2 computer
How can I fix this?
thanks a lot for your help, it's really appreciated.
1)Have you got the latest MDAC installation ?
2)Track down all instances of sqloledb.rll and sqloledb.dll . Make sure
they are the latest versions and match up

Hi,
We have developped many applications, for a major customer, connected
to the same SQL Server database.

Annoying Error Message

Hello,

I recently migrated from 2000 to 2005 database. On the new server, I kept getting this type of error message when there is some sort of join involved and they are not complex join either.

Error - "A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded."

ie

select A.Cookie1, A.Cookie2
into BookersLookers_Cookie
from BookersLookers_DataSet A
LEFT JOIN ActionSetup B on A.ActionID = B.ActionID
group by A.Cookie1, A.Cookie2

Is there something in the code where I could prevent this error from happening?

Any insight is appreciated,

-Lawrence

You encounter an old bug which should have been fixed if you're running sp2.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/910416

The error log we're interested in is the sql log. You can get it by executing the following sproc.

exec sp_readerrorlog

Please post the result of "select @.@.version" while you're at it.

|||

I posted select @.@.version earlier - 9.00.3042 (X64)

I would find out any logs from sp_readerrorlog

If all else fails, I guess this is a big bug, and hopefully SP2 will fix it.

Hello,

I received the following error message from sp_readerrorlop

2007-04-30 12:51:18.620 Server Error: 17310, Severity: 20, State: 1.

You should probably do what the message says.

Contact Product Support Services with the dump produced in the log directory.

Or possibly post the .mdmp file on Connect for analysis.

|||

I was wondering if anyone had a fix for this type of error/bug? Any hotfx or work-around?

Our IT Support contacted MS, but MS Production Support is not very responsive in this case. "Severe Error" still occurs in simple join. Any additional help would be much appreciated.

Sincerely,

SP1 works fine, so I would NOT recommend applying SP2.

YOu need do have a look in the WIndows event log or in the log files of SQL Server mentioned. There is a problem starting the service, the message that you provided is just a generic one which doesn′t tell the specific error.

Analysis Services started and then stopped, Event ID: 0xC1210000

I just installed SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and SP1 and SP2. I cannot start Analysis Services. The message box states: The SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service on Local Computer started and then stopped. I looked in the log files located at: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\OLAP\Log and found these entries:

During installation I did get an unhandled exception (I don't know what component caused the exception). I have found this in the SQLDUMPER_ERRORLOG.log file:

Any ideas how to get this service started?

I had the same problem as you discribed. Then I tried to reapply SP2. It works fine now.

I guess when you first applied SP2, analysis service was not installed and therefore the patch is not installed. Download the latest SP2 and try it again:

I have installed SQL Server 2005

In services.msc SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) can't be started.

What is this?

Thanks...

Some application occupied AS TCP port. In case of default instance it would be 2383. Please run netstat or (even better) tcpmon to find out what this application is.|||

Wow.

It seems like SQL Analysis Services can't live with started SAP on the Machine.

What ports use Analysis Services?

Default instance uses port 2383.

The redirector for named instances uses port 2382.

Ports for named instances can be manually overriden.

Ok

Where can I change instance port for Analysis?

Sorry for borring, I'm a novice.

Where is it? I'm going in Computer Managment -> SQL Server Configuration Manager -> SQL Server 2005 Services -> SQL Server Analysis Services ->Properties

But there nothing...

You need to go to SQL Server Mgmt Studio> Connect to Analysis Services>Right Click on the server-> Hit Properties> Scroll down and check the box "Show Advanced(All) properties" and then you will see the property "Port"

Analysis Services 2005 OLE DB Provider Error

I try to open a SSAS Cube but I get a OLE DB error message below.

The same cube I can browse with the SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio.

Error message:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Analysis Services 2005 Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Analysis Services 2005 reported:

Errors in the OLE DB provider. Could not connect to the redirector. Ensure that the SQLBrowser service is running on the '<MY Server Name>' server. Errors in the OLE DB provider. An error occurred while named instance information was being retrieved from the SQLBrowser service on the '<MY Server Name>' server.

The SQL Browser is used when you are attempting to communicate with a named instance. What you are seeing is a known problem, fixed in SP1, where the SQL Browser needs communication with a domain controller to validate your access rights. This happens to me if I disconnect my laptop from the network and try an connect to a named instance on it. I've also seen it if the SQL Browser is running under a service account that isn't a machine administrator -- and third I've seen this if you are running under XP SP2 and the firewall is stopping your connectivity to the SQL Browser.

You have a few options: 1) make it the default instance -- that works without any problems, 2) always make sure a DC is available, 3) make sure the XP firewall is disabled on the SQL Browser port# (and the various instance port#s), 4) attempt to connect specifically to the port # for the instance (which bypasses the redirector) -- try using <server>:<port#> syntax for the server name.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Dave,

I have check the options:

1. I have installed sql2005 with the default instance <MSSQLSERVER> that is not the problem

2. I'm connected to the DC

3. I have disabled the firewall, and that has changed the error message!!

The new message is:

Error reported by OLAP server.

Additional information:

Microsoft? OLE DB Provider for Analysis Services reported:

Cannot connect to the server '<MYSERVER>. The server is either not started or too busy.

But I can work with the SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio without any problem!!

|||

I have found the solution for the reported error message.

After reinstalling the "Workstation components" I can connect to the cubes in SSAS for a client Olap tool.

Thanks Dave for your support.

Regards,

Peter

|||I got the same error with the same symptoms but resolved the OLAP connection problem simply by reinstalling the OLAP provider for SQL Server 2005. The file name is SQLServer2005_ASOLEDB9.msi and it can be found on the microsoft downloads site.|||

Hi Dave,

Some questions for you about your options:

1. How do you make SQL Server 2005 the default instance if SQL Server 2000 is also installed on the same machine.
SQL Server 2000 can be removed if this is an option.
2. How can you confirm that the DC is available besides when you log into the server which is on the domain?
3. The sql server is on a windows 2003 server. The AD server is in another state and is accessed via a VPN. Could this be a problem?
4. How do you connect to the port # since when I use the Data Connection Wizard and use 10.1.1.1:1384 it comes back with the error:
"Transport Layer error."
If I use the instance name syntax -> 10.1.1.1\InstanceName - it works but then it uses the redirector which causes the main error.

So a couple of your solutions have some problems for me... is there any other way around them?

Thanks,
Andrew.

>>1. How do you make SQL Server 2005 the default instance if SQL Server 2000 is also installed on the same machine.

There could be only a single default instance on the machine. And Analysis Services 2000 does not support named instances, so for AS 2005 be default instance you need to remove AS2000.

>>2. How can you confirm that the DC is available besides when you log into the server which is on the domain?

Not sure about this. You can try posting on windows networing newsgroup.

Make sure you've got port numeber correctly. By default named instance picks up a port number dynamically on every restart. You can force it to use fixed port by specifying Port server configuration property.
