I have an access front end and a SQL 2000 backend. In the backend I changed a ntext field to a text field using a script and it then placed the field at the end of the field list. when I try to make a change to a record on the front end I get an error that another user has edited the record and must re-edit it. I can then make a change to the record. If I do a refresh I then get the error again. I then moved the text field back into it's original position and the error went away. Another SQL script question.
Hey all,
There is probably some server side property or method you can call that will tell you who the ASPNET user is running as (e.g., domain\ASPNET) which would allow you to use the other syntax to create a trusted connection.
How do i make sure that the local machine aspnet user account has privilages after installing my sql script on a local machine. ( this script gets run during my vb.net setup project. )
i was thinking about adding the user to the sql script its self. but i am unsure how to do this.
if anyone could help i would be greatly appreciative.

-- and making sure you are executing from 'SomeDatabase' grant access to 'SomeName' to the database 'SomeDatabase'

Another licensing question
Hi,
I have a question about SQL Server plus user CALs. What exactly is meant by
"user"? Is it a person that logs into my application or is it a user id
specified in connecion string?
Can I have one user CAL for X people, that are accessing SQL server through
identical userid in connection string?
for example:
users: John [logged into MyApplication at PC1], Mark[logged into
MyApplication at PC2], Bob[logged into MyApplication at PC3]
MyApplication is installed on everybody's PC (that is there are three copies
of MyApplication (PC1 and PC2 and PC3)).
Each installation of MyApplication is using this connection string to access
SQL Server:
ConnStr = "User ID=DEP_1;Password=abc;Persist Security Info=True;Connection
Timeout=15;Data Source=XXX;Initial Catalog=YYY"
Can I have one user CAL for user DEP_1 or do I need three user CALs for all
three users?

You needs CALS for all 3 users.
DEP_1 is just a security user and does not count in for CALS.

found only licensing per-seat (device CAL) or per processor in my SQL Server
licensing setup)
3. How will Server know, if there are more users accessing server than are
defined in server licensing properties? (I will have only one CAL for DEP_1
and server will never know, who is currently logged into MyApplication)

5. What if MyApplication from previous post will be a windows service with
no UI interraction [no user logs into it. It will run on background on three

2. Is user CAL somehow entered into SQL Server licensing properties? (I
found only licensing per-seat (device CAL) or per processor in my SQL Server
licensing setup)
3. How will Server know, if there are more users accessing server than are
defined in server licensing properties? (I will have only one CAL for DEP_1
and server will never know, who is currently logged into MyApplication)
4. Is user CAL always "mapped" (=issued) to real person?
5. What if MyApplication from previous post will be a windows service with
no UI interraction [no user logs into it. It will run on background on t
hree
PCs and process some results]. Could it use only one user CAL then?
Bweh, I know, silly questions, but I'm lost in all these licensing options.

I have a question about SQL Server plus user CALs. What exactly is meant by
"user"? Is it a person that logs into my application or is it a user id
specified in connecion string?
Can I have one user CAL for X people, that are accessing SQL server through
identical userid in connection string?
for example:
users: John [logged into MyApplication at PC1], Mark[logged into
MyApplication at PC2], Bob[logged into MyApplication at PC3]
MyApplication is installed on everybody's PC (that is there are three copies
of MyApplication (PC1 and PC2 and PC3)).
Each installation of MyApplication is using this connection string to access
SQL Server:

Another archival or restoration process is currently . . .
I have a user getting the following error:
Another archival or restoration process is currently in progress on this computer. Cannot continue archival at this time.
I am told that this server is functioning otherwise. Copy and Backup functions seem to cause this error.
Anyone have any idea where to start - I've turned up very little searching forums and the Internet on this error message.

This happens with Analysis Services 2000 or 2005 ? If it's 2005, I'm not sure what you mean by Copy function (in AS2000 I assume it's copy database in Analysis Manager).

I am also angry and frustrated with SQL 2005 Management Studio - here are some of the problems I'm having ...
1. When I look at the jobs on the summary page and click details I see only the name and status of the job - With Enterprise Manager I can see the name, status, category, last run date and next run date. Where's the rest of the info?
2. Occasionally I get a blank summary page with nothing on it - don't ask me how I managed to do it. Without it, I could not select multiple objects in object explorer for scripting for example - and why is that the case?
3. Under Management Studio how do I get access to Integration services and reporting services? Or do I use Visual Studio for those? Or should I be using Visual Studio for writing and debugging stored procs? I thought it was all integrated under Management Studio - but is Management Studio just for querying SQL databases and Business Intelligence Studio for that and other data sources? I'm confused by all the tools.
4. I would like to find a good tutorial for using this interface - the books online tutorial is sparse - but I never felt that I really needed one with EM.
5. On the positive side I like the new interface for modifying individual SQL objects - it's groups of objects that are giving me the most trouble.

1. Limited information on the summary page.
We've heard this from several different sources. The "Job Steps Execution History" report provides some of the information you listed. Other information requires you to select properties for the particular job.
2. Blank summary page.
I haven't heard of this happening. Can you consistently repro this or is it totally hit or miss?
3. Access to SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS from within SSMS
Connections are server specific. From the Object Explorer click on Connect and the drop down will list the different server types (AS, RS, IS, etc) you can connect to. From here the connection dialog will be displayed and you can choose the physical server to connect to. BI Studio is for developing BI applications not for managing the servers.
4. Good tutorial for SSMS
An update to the tutorials will be posted shortly but I don't know if this will address your needs. I haven't done an inventory of third party tutorials, but I'm sure you can find some out on SQL Server sites like SQL Junkies.
5. Groups of objects are giving me the most trouble
Can you elaborate on this?

1. When I look at the jobs on the summary page and click details I see only the name and status of the job - With Enterprise Manager I can see the name, status, category, last run date and next run date. Where's the rest of the info?
2. Occasionally I get a blank summary page with nothing on it - don't ask me how I managed to do it. Without it, I could not select multiple objects in object explorer for scripting for example - and why is that the case?
3. Under Management Studio how do I get access to Integration services and reporting services? Or do I use Visual Studio for those? Or should I be using Visual Studio for writing and debugging stored procs? I thought it was all integrated under Management Studio - but is Management Studio just for querying SQL databases and Business Intelligence Studio for that and other data sources? I'm confused by all the tools.
4. I would like to find a good tutorial for using this interface - the books online tutorial is sparse - but I never felt that I really needed one with EM.
5. On the positive side I like the new interface for modifying individual SQL objects - it's groups of objects that are giving me the most trouble.

1. Limited information on the summary page.
We've heard this from several different sources. The "Job Steps Execution History" report provides some of the information you listed. Other information requires you to select properties for the particular job.
2. Blank summary page.
I haven't heard of this happening. Can you consistently repro this or is it totally hit or miss?
3. Access to SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS from within SSMS
Connections are server specific. From the Object Explorer click on Connect and the drop down will list the different server types (AS, RS, IS, etc) you can connect to. From here the connection dialog will be displayed and you can choose the physical server to connect to. BI Studio is for developing BI applications not for managing the servers.
4. Good tutorial for SSMS
An update to the tutorials will be posted shortly but I don't know if this will address your needs. I haven't done an inventory of third party tutorials, but I'm sure you can find some out on SQL Server sites like SQL Junkies.
5. Groups of objects are giving me the most trouble
Can you elaborate on this?

2. Cant repro this.
3. I eventually found the Registered Servers windows which helped me greatly with managing multiple servers.
4. OK.
5. On the groups of objects - this isn't that big of deal - it's just surprising that I cannot highlight groups of objects in the Object Explorer - I must use the summary page for that. Thanks R

# 2. I am not sure the sceanrio you are refering to. For eg. If you are selecting Alerts node and there are no alerts, then the summary page is expected to be empty.
# 3. You can connect to Inetgration services and Reporting services from SQL Server Management studio(SSMS). For editing the packages you will need to use SQL BIDS(Business Intelligence Development Studio). VS can be used for debugging, it is not integrated in SSMS.
# 4. BOL has all the answers to your questions you have posted. If there is some "area" that you are looking for does not have answer, please let us know.

Analysis Svc security problem
Hi All
Whether I set roles or non at all to my cubes ANY user can
connect and read data from them via excel.
Is this a known issue? Anyone else having this problem or
am I doing something wrong?

The Users can access the Cubes by any means, only if they have enough access
rights to the Cube.
Check whether you have added "Everyone" in the Cube Roles mistakenly or whet
her "Everyone" has been added to the System Administrator group or OLAP Admi
nistrator group.

Analysis Services upgrade to Enterprise Edition
I was running SQL 2000 Standard with the Analysis Services
repository in a SQL database.
I upgraded SQL to Enterprise. When a user tried to create
a partitioned cube he got: user-defined partitions are
available only if you install Analysis Services SQL Server
2000 Enterprise Edition
I "upgraded" to Analysis Services Enterprise - actually
all it did was reinstall. Since I had already migrated
the repository to SQL, my cubes did not exist.
Here is probably where my mistake occurred: I "re-
migraded" the repository to SQL ... my cubes are still not
there.
I have since restored the repository database from a pre-
upgraded Analysis Services version ... my cubes are still
not there.
I have a large project that is waiting for these cubes.
Please tell me I have a chance of getting these cubes back!
Does anyone have any suggestiongs?

Analysis Services Question
Hi all.
I'm a new user to Analysis Services and am really stuck.
I have Cube on a local copy of SQL Server - Analysis Services (Personal Edition). I have the same Cube in a production server (Enterprise Edition).
When the cube gets rebuilt it takes about 45 minutes on my local machine and about 23 hours on the production machine. They are running with the same amount of rows in the data (13 million).
One thing I noticed is that the data is written to 9 segments of the partition on my local. And when running the process in production, it reads and writes the records alot slower, and I do not
notice any segments being written.
Is there any special setting with storage when building a Cube. I used mostly default setting on the local. I'm not sure about in Production and not sure how to check.
If anyone has any ideas on where to look or any ideas as to what could be causing this - it would be greatly appreciated.
