Another user has edited the record

I have an access front end and a SQL 2000 backend. In the backend I changed a ntext field to a text field using a script and it then placed the field at the end of the field list. when I try to make a change to a record on the front end I get an error that another user has edited the record and must re-edit it. I can then make a change to the record. If I do a refresh I then get the error again. I then moved the text field back into it's original position and the error went away. Can anyone explain this?Hi Doug:

another sql query

Hi All,

I'm really struggling to figure out and sql query that will retrieve the first 30 characters of a database field. My plan is to have a brief preview of the text and then have ...[more] afterwards. So far I have the below (text is the field I'm trying to only retrieve the first 30 characters):-

SELECT id, title, text FROM w_pages WHERE ID <> '1' ORDER BY ID

I've set the query to not retrieve id 1 as that's the text of my homepage. I've attempted LEFT(text,30) as I thought that was the way to do it, but it didn't work for me :(

Also, can these types of queries be used with sql2000 'ntext' database fields?

LEFT ( character_expression , integer_expression )

Arguments
character_expression

Is an expression of character or binary data. character_expression can be a constant, variable, or column. character_expression must be of a data type that can be implicitly convertible to varchar. Otherwise, use the CAST function to explicitly convert character_expression.

integer_expression

Is a positive whole number. If integer_expression is negative, a null string is returned.

SO, I would change text to LEFT(CONVERT(nvarchar(30),[text]))

I used:-

SELECT id, pagedate, title, show, LEFT(CONVERT(nvarchar(300),[text]),300) as '111' FROM w_pages WHERE id <> '1' AND show = 'yes' ORDER BY ID DESC;

And then changed the datafield in my datagrid to '111' instead of 'text'

number of the same values. Is there a way to select on that field for
only those records where there is a single occurrence of that value in
the entire table ? I don't want any records returned by the query if
there is more than one occurrence, just if there's one. Thanks all.

This is one way to do it, using the Northwind database - find any customers
who have only one row in the Orders table:

To find single occurrances for a column...

select col1
count(*) as col_cnt
from table1
group by col1
having count(*) = 1;

so to return the rows with single occurances, join the above back to
the original table...

select t.*
from table 1 as t
(select col1
count(*) as col_cnt
from table1
group by col1
having count(*) = 1
) as s
where t.col1 = s.col1;

Another Newbie

Trying to insert into a field that is varchar(20) but I want to pad the
entry with "0" on the beginning of it... so if the item to be written is 10
chars long I want to write 10 "0" on the front of the item.. how to
accomplish?

StudentInfo. In the constraint expression I put Date = GETDATE() and
unchecked the "check existing date on creation" and the "enforce constraint
for replication" check boxes. I left the "Enforce constraint for INSERTs and
UPDATEs" checked. However, when I teachers tried to update this field this
morning, and enter today's date, they all got check constraint errors. Does
anybody have any idea what might be wrong? All I want is for the Date field
to only accept the current date when being updated.
Any help would be appreciated, I only have 9 teachers but, everyday at least
1 will get the date wrong.

second. It's very unlikely that anyone entering data by hand would
happen to enter precisely this value. If you want to get a date-only
for today into the table, instead of having the teacher enter it, why
not use a default on that column of
DATEADD(dd,DATEDIFF(dd,0,GETDATE()),0) and leave that column out of the
column list and values the teacher enters?

unchecked the "check existing date on creation" and the "enforce constraint

for today into the table, instead of having the teacher enter it, why
not use a default on that column of
DATEADD(dd,DATEDIFF(dd,0,GETDATE()),0) and leave that column out of the
column list and values the teacher enters?

I have a table that has a group. In this group, I want to filter by 2 different expressions, concatenated with an OR. BUT I can't change the "And/Or" column value for the first entry because it is grayed out. The column will automatically change to an OR value if both my expression column fields are the same (which I don’t want) but if I put any other value in to the expression field of the second row, the "And/Or" field of the first row automatically changes to an AND.

PLEASE! How do I get the And/Or field "ungrayed" so I can change it to what I want?

The 2 filters I and using check the UserID = to the user, and the other is checking a count to get the Top N 1. (So just showing the current user and the top producer)

The OR gets only enabled if the filter expressions of two filters are identical.

Note: another option is to use OR directly in your filter expression. Example:
Filter expression: =(condition1 OR condition2)
Filter type: =
Filter value: =True

What is the logic behind making this kind of decision?

I just can't comprehend someone deisgning an application like RS and saying... "lets ONLY give them an OR if the fields used in the field expression is identical"

Ok,

Is there any plans to make it a changeable field? a couple online articles made it sound like you could choose, rather than it auto populating.

What is the logic behind making this kind of decision?

I just can't comprehend someone deisgning an application like RS and saying... "lets ONLY give them an OR if the fields used in the field expression is identical"

need to put a Or with different expressions, like "pruductId< 100 or

quantity>10"....

Filter value: = ?

But what I have to put on value?

I have a table that has a group. In this group, I want to filter by 2 different expressions, concatenated with an OR. BUT I can't change the "And/Or" column value for the first entry because it is grayed out. The column will automatically change to an OR value if both my expression column fields are the same (which I don’t want) but if I put any other value in to the expression field of the second row, the "And/Or" field of the first row automatically changes to an AND.

PLEASE! How do I get the And/Or field "ungrayed" so I can change it to what I want?

The 2 filters I and using check the UserID = to the user, and the other is checking a count to get the Top N 1. (So just showing the current user and the top producer)

Filter expression: =(condition1 OR condition2)
